As I begin my second year as an Investigations Administrator at Integras Intelligence, I’ve experienced radical changes as I transitioned from ministry to a new professional environment. While that sounds head-spinning (and it was), three pillars helped me successfully navigate this major career transition and build confidence in my new role: people, structured processes, and ongoing training.
Here are my reflections on where I was and where I am now. Hopefully, anyone considering a career change will find my experience helpful.
From Sacred to Secular
Before stepping into the world of private investigations, I spent 26 years as the Children’s Ministries Director at my local church. The shift from ministry to investigations was daunting, but what made the transition possible—and ultimately successful—were the people who guided me, the processes that provided structure, and the training that helped me develop new skills. Some essential skills carried over, such as communication, organization, discretion, and relationship-building, but it was the support and guidance from my new colleagues that truly empowered me.
Purpose Starts with People
Having a supportive team made all the difference. From day one, my colleagues at Integras offered encouragement, mentorship, and constructive feedback. Their willingness to share their expertise and answer questions helped me adapt quickly. Whether it was learning to handle sensitive information or navigating the nuances of case management, the people around me were instrumental in my growth. They made it clear that they expected a learning curve and would support me through it.
Here’s what I learned about my new company and new career. From day one, I found a collaborative environment and team dedicated to open communication and teamwork. This culture fostered both professional development and a sense of belonging. That was vital as I stepped into a new industry.
If you ever consider a career change, do a deep dive into the corporate culture of your prospective new employer to see if the people there will support your learning and growth.
The Benefits of a Proven Process
Clear processes provided much-needed structure as I learned the ropes. Integras had well-defined procedures to document communications, safeguard sensitive information, and maintain organized case files. These systems made a huge difference. Reviewing and editing investigators’ field notes and transforming them into client-ready reports became easier as I grew comfortable with the established workflow. The process-driven nature of the job ensured consistency and quality, which reassured me as I built my confidence in a new domain.
Training: A Foundation and Bridge
Training created the bridge between my old career and new one. The company’s investment in robust onboarding and ongoing education made learning data systems, reporting tools, and legal coordination tasks much easier. I was also able to apply my existing skills—specifically, bilingualism—to communicate with non-English-speaking witnesses while learning new legal procedures. These learning opportunities were vital to overcoming uncertainties and developing specialized skills required in investigations administration.
Applying the Three Pillars in Real Life
Several experiences from my first year illustrated the incredible value of these three pillars. When a field agent struggled to communicate with a key individual due to a language barrier, teamwork and training helped me step in and facilitate the process. I learned how to review technical surveillance reports much more easily, thanks to collaborative efforts and consistent templates. Supporting executive protection operations demonstrated the importance of real-time processes and adaptable training.
The Ongoing Value of People, Process, and Training
As I start my second year, I’m more convinced than ever that thriving in a new role depends on these three critical pillars: the people who mentor and support you, the processes that provide clarity, and the training that equips you for ongoing growth. My journey at Integras Intelligence has shown that embracing these pillars transforms uncertainty into opportunity and enables meaningful contributions—no matter how unfamiliar the job may seem at first.
Embracing Change—and Opportunity
Transitioning to a completely new job is never easy, but with the right people, clear processes, and dedicated training, it’s possible to not just survive but thrive. I’m grateful for the Integras team, the structured workflows, and every opportunity to learn. Each one has made my journey richer and more rewarding.
